How to take a screenshot on Windows?
Two keys and a drag. Here is every way to capture your Windows screen — and where the picture ends up.
For most people, the fastest current method is Win + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay lets you capture a rectangle, free-form area, window, or the full screen. If you want the whole display saved immediately as a file, use Win + PrtScn.

How to Take Screenshot of Specific Area?
You can take a screenshot on Windows by pressing some specific buttons simultaneously. You can capture documents, important information on various websites, or save anything that you want in no time. You can take a screenshot by pressing the following buttons.
To take a screenshot on Windows, first of all, open anything that you want to capture.
You need to press and hold Win + Shift and press S or directly press PrtScn if you have Windows 11 to capture your Windows screen specific area. Then you can choose the area your mouse to draw a rectangle in order to specify that you want to capture. It is useful when you want to save specific information instead of capturing the full screen.
How to Capture an Active Window?
If you want to screenshot an active Window, you have to press and hold Alt and press Print Screen at the same time, and the screenshot will be ready to view.
The active-window image is copied to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, a document, a chat, or an image editor with Ctrl + V. This is especially useful when you do not want the taskbar or other apps in the capture.
How to Take ScreenShot of Complete Screen?
Hold Win and press PrtScn to capture and save the entire desktop. Windows normally saves the PNG file in your Pictures › Screenshots folder. If Pictures is backed up or redirected to OneDrive, the Screenshots folder is inside that active Pictures location instead.

The Print Screen key can capture the combined desktop across multiple monitors. If you only want one monitor, the safest built-in method is Win + Shift + S and then rectangle-select that monitor, or use Window mode for one app. On some setups, Win + PrtScn also saves the full multi-monitor desktop as one wide image.
How do you take a scrolling screenshot on Windows?
Windows does not provide one universal scrolling-screenshot shortcut for every desktop app. If the content is a webpage, use the browser’s own full-page capture feature when available, or save/print the page to PDF. For apps that do not support full-page capture, take overlapping screenshots and combine them in an editor. Avoid installing an unknown capture utility only for this feature; prefer a reputable browser or established screenshot app.
How many screenshots can you take at a time?
Windows does not impose a practical one-screenshot limit. You can take screenshots repeatedly. File-based shortcuts create separate image files, while clipboard-only shortcuts can be replaced by the next copied item unless Clipboard history is enabled. Why is my Windows screenshot not working?

- The capture is on the clipboard: paste it into Paint or another app.

Menus, delays, clipboard history and recording
For menus or hover states that disappear when you click elsewhere, open Snipping Tool and use a delay before the capture. Clipboard-only screenshots can be managed with Windows Clipboard history when it is enabled, but a saved PNG is safer when the image must be kept. On current Windows 11, Snipping Tool can also record a rectangular screen area; use a screenshot when one still image explains the issue and a recording only when movement or timing matters.
File quality and privacy on Windows
PNG is normally the best format for interface screenshots because text and icons stay sharp. Before sharing, inspect the taskbar, browser tabs, account names, notification previews and any QR codes or authentication details. If information must be removed, crop it away or cover it with an opaque shape and verify the exported image.
